fall forage

Fathead minnows

For those who are looking to get the most out of their ponds fall forage is a good way to get a big boost. We typically stock 10 to 100 pounds of Fathead Minnows per surface acer of water per year.

In the fall after all the fish are done spawning most of the edible size fish are long gone. This is why fall forage is so important. By adding thousand of minnows you give your fish an adequate food source for the long winter months ahead. A good majority of these minnows will get ate, but a few will survive and spawn in the following spring once again boosting your food source. Fathead minnows spawn every 18 to 21 days when the water is 60 degrees or above. Unfortunately for the fathead minnows they are the slowest swimmers and will eventually get eaten out of the pond. Fathead minnows are by far the most popular forage fish because they provide food for all of the  fish in your pond. This is why we like to stock every year. Fathead Minnows are $11 per pound with discounts on large orders.

Rainbow Trout

These are for the Largemouth bass enthusiasts. People who manage Largemouth bass ponds often stock forage fish like Goldfish, bullheads, shiners, shad, ect. to put weight on their bass. Rainbow Trout unlike other forage have zero chance of overpopulating and taking over your pond. We stock trout in October. When the water temp hits 75 degrees this is fatal to trout this typical happens some time in June. Our forage trout are 4-8 inches long and are $15 per pound. We Typically stock 50 to 75 pounds per surface acer.

Golden shiners

Golden Shiners are another good forage fish; typically they are bass forage because golden shiners can out grow the appetite of most other fish. A full grown golden shiner can reach 12 inches long and can be caught on a rod and reel. Golden shiners are $12.50 per pound with discounts on large orders. We typically stock 10-100 pounds per surface acer.
